I'm sure part of your initial impression was influenced by culture shock. You get used to living in a simple, less commercialized environment and then boom...back into it. I do want to visit someday..I've heard it's visually stunning...hey...are the Starbucks over there serving eggnog lattes?...just curious...can't imagine how it would be to grow up associating Christmas with summer..do they have how weather holiday treats...like Christmas snow cones...or spice mulled chilled wine?? The US seems to have that mastered. One radio station started playing 24 hr Christmas music BEFORE Thanksgiving (what's up with that?). I think it's a good sign that you aren't eating up the fact that Auckland is so similar to here - that means you aren't ready to come home. Hope you enjoy your trip north.
