As an Aucklander, I would never recommend that anyone stay in the CBD [Central Business District]. It is in one word boring. You might aid commercial. I invite every visitor to go west.

Ohhh! Wait to you get on the back roads and out of Auckland. The onslaught of consumerism and commercialized Christmas will be much less. Though I bet the cultural shock coming from South America will last for a while...Welcome to New Zealand!

I've heard similar comparisons regarding Auckland and San Francisco. I'm sure part of your initial impression was influenced by culture shock. You get used to living in a simple, less commercialized environment and then boom...back into it. I do want to visit someday..I've heard it's visually stunning...hey...are the Starbucks over there serving eggnog lattes?...just curious...can't imagine how it would be to grow up associating Christmas with summer..do they have how weather holiday treats...like Christmas snow cones...or spice mulled chilled wine?? Love you guys!

I am sure we are still way ahead of them in the Christmas consumerism department. The US seems to have that mastered. One radio station started playing 24 hr Christmas music BEFORE Thanksgiving (what's up with that?). I think it's a good sign that you aren't eating up the fact that Auckland is so similar to here - that means you aren't ready to come home. Hope you enjoy your trip north.

To George: No worries, we are not disappointed to be here at all! On the contrary, we can't wait to explore the back roads of New Zealand for the next two months.
To Martha: The flight was fine -- I got a full night's sleep. We flew LAN, which was really nice.

Hi Guys! Glad you arrived safely. How was the flight for you, Sar? That's crazy about Tuesday disappearing! Can't wait to hear what the countryside is like. I suspect you'll really enjoy it.

Love you and miss you -

It's sad you are finding New Zealand a disappointment. Perhaps things will pick up in Australia.
