It’s tough to answer your question specifically because our lodging costs depend almost entirely on the city and country we’re in, and whether we’re renting an apartment or staying in a hotel. We aim to average $200 or less per night, and sometimes it’s easy to get under that target (e.g. at campground cabins Down Under, or cheap cabanas in Argentina). Other times, especially when we’re in cities, it’s very difficult to find anything decent that will sleep 4 for close to $200. As a rule of thumb, cities are much more costly; we save money here in Switzerland, for example, by staying in small towns on the outskirts of major metro areas rather than in centrally located places. Renting an apartment is always more economical but takes more work to set up and usually requires a one-week minimum, so if we’re moving every few days, we stay in hotels instead. Also, we only have 2 kids and usually are able to squeeze into one room, but often hotels make us pay extra for a large “family room” or rent two rooms; if you have 3 or more kids and stay in hotels, expect to pay for two rooms. We didn’t camp much because we don’t have camping gear and want to travel lite, but that’s always a more economical way to go! For more advice I encourage you to read my blog post “How to Plan a Year-Long Family Travel Itinerary” and it has a link in that post to another article I did on this related topic for almostfearless.com called “The Biggest Mistakes to Avoid When Planning Long-Term Family Travel.” Hope this helps — good luck!

Great article ! Having travelled a lot with our 3 kids, I can relate to a lot of that.We usually have a mad dash out the door when we check out of anywhere. Do we have the passports (we have a total of 13 passports between the five of us !), toilet bag, all the plugs, adapters, books etc. and then as soon as we’ve left, the questions start. do we have the passports, toilet bag…?

I have loved following your journey and am still in the process of planning mine – our family is set to leave on 20th August and I just wondered what your average nightly bill has been…have you stayed in hotels or hostels mainly and has there been much difference in cost? I’m just trying to work out accomodation in certain places at the moment – mainly central and south america.
Thanks
Ruth

You have stayed in 63 places, wow!!! I have often said that travel is sometimes better upon reflection…..but even better if you can enjoy it while you are experiencing the difficulties. I think you have learned to appreciate and deal with the parts of travel that can be stressful, like figuring out the train tickets and seats, or finding a good place to eat, and enjoy them…..
It’s so fun to live vicariously through you. Your kids are getting so much out of this experience. I loved reading this so much, it just makes me want to hop on a plane and join you. ahhhh

It certainly sounds familiar – we’ve been doing the same thing in the last few days as we’ve been negotiating the Shinkansen trains here in Japan! Look forward to reading more. Best wishes.

(I like how you’ve been switching back and for between more personal reports and reflections–those aimed more at family and friends–and ones like this, which ought to be useful to a more general travel readership). Surprised you leave your passports in your room (that’s the one thing I always had on me–but then, I was usually bunking down in hostels).

Hope you’re enjoying wherever you are now. We’re getting a late spring storm (almost a foot of fresh powder–in late April!), so relish the Italian sunshine to the extent that you can!

I’m glad everything worked out in the end (and always to). I’m having crazy flashbacks of my train ride to Venice and erroneously getting off at the wrong station. I’m pretty sure it was the middle of the night. I was with some girls I’d met who where traveling Europe after their semester abroad through Colorado College. Somehow things worked out and we got on the water taxis as the sun was rising. I loved Venice and I hope you did, too. Can’t wait to hear what happens next!! Love you guys –

M.
