Just wanted to thank you for this post. I saw your comment on the NY Times and linked over. My husband and I are traveling to London in the fall — first time crossing the Atlantic for both of us — and we were having trouble figuring out where to stay and I had no idea what to expect from our favorite thing to do together … run. (Can you tell I’m not a world traveler?) Your post got me so excited. Thanks and best of luck to your family for many more adventures in your lives!

I had to tell you that your description of anticipatory nostalgia is something I have often had over the years (though more frequently when I was younger). I used to call it nostalgia-in-the-moment and Dad and I shared it especially at times in the High Sierra. I enjoy reading your FB updates and, frequently, your blogs, and hope your transition back to life in the bay area goes well. My husband is getting ideas now that I’ve pointed out your posts too–in a few years we may just follow suit!

Loved your comments regarding the ‘out-of-body’ phenomenon that so often happens when we encounter special moments(this notion of anticipating the recollection of an experience that we haven’t yet completed). I love the way that these long months on the road seemed to have grounded each of your and made you much more immediately aware of your surroundings. That’s a gift that I suspect will keep on giving for some time to come!

I was very glad to read- 1st, your in an English speaking Country, 2nd, yours and Colly’s memories are of fond, cherished, revisited times and places and 3rd(ly) Will you guys climb all 300 and something steps up to the top of St. Paul Cathedral? I’ve very wonderful memories of my time in London running around with Jeff Reynolds whose father was on sabbatical from Colgate. Thank You for another terrific blog!!!! Perhaps in the future a trip to Ireland to explore your Irish Roots? Awaiting you at home will be B-Day Cards for the Smith Sojouners. It seemed simpler that way. As one who wears dentures(Dad will attest) here’s wishing for Morgan no more dental pain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lots of Love as you approach the tail end of travels—Be Safe!!! Love Ya Guys—Lars & Rosie

After the usual miserable weather in London there are breaks of warmth and the city comes alive. The picture of the boat reminds me of the days we took the boats from our flat in little venice to the zoo with the kids. Windsor is also a favorite spot of ours and many runs along that trail when we would go up there. I did a 1/2 marathon near that spot.
We thought we would be back to London by now but due to tightening of the belt haven’t made it back. Maybe next year.
