Going around September/October is good because it’s shoulder/offpeak season and it’s easy to score accommodation there. You can literally turn up to Yosemite and you should be able to find accommodation easily. Different situation in summer!

We use to go there at least once a year, but usually between Thanksgiving and Christmas when it can be magical and not crowded. We’d often catch the first snow.

One can hang out for hours for free at the Ahwahnee and soak up the atmosphere without the high price tag. We’ve always been frugal, which allows us to now do our open ended world tour as a family. 😉

Like you did here, I always like finding ways to enjoy luxury or a great place on a tight budget.

I think more of the Curry Village for ice skating which every California needs to experience. 😉

Glad you are still traveling! 😉

We are in the early stages of planning a 2+ week vacation from Chicago to California for our family of 7 for next summer. Planning on staying a few nights in two of the tent cabins at Curry Village…your pointers and descriptions of the camp were very helpful!

Enjoyed this post–but two days into the start of the school year, I’m so longing for vacation (already!) that it was harder to appreciate than it should have been. My sense of Yosemite (which I haven’t visited in years and years) is that you have to embrace all the crowds (or go nuts). The misanthrope in me cringes! (But it DOES look like a lot of fun).

Again, thanks for posting this,

–David
